Ohio, Mullen recalls having a mic in her had singing with family and friends as early as age 2 and she wrote her first song at 12. Mullen's musical career began when a man at her church hired her to work as a background singer at his recording studio for $6 an hour. This eventually led to her first recording contract, although the label she signed with went under. She stayed in the business during the 90s, doing songwriting, background singing and dancing, but after "On My Knees," a song she co-wrote for Jaci Velasquez won the 1998 GMA Song of the Year Award, Mullen was offered a deal with Warner Records. In 2000, she came out with her self-titled debut album, establishing herself as a rising gospel star. Her sophomore album, 2001's talk about it, garnered her a Dove Award for Songwriter of the Year and for Song of the Year (for Redeemer). Mullen recorded Live and Christmas albums and in 2004 came out with Everyday People, which got her a Grammy nomination for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album of the Year (2005) and a Dove awards for Urban Album of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year (2005). "I am everyday people when it comes down to it," Mullen has said of the much decorated album. "We all get to do different things, but when we take everything else off-we take the titles off, we take the job descriptions off, we take the salaries away-we're all everyday people that hurt, that bleed, that cry, regardless of the skin color, regardless of the title of our job."



In addition to the accolades for her recording career, Mullen's reputation as a live performer has also garnered her acclaim throughout her career. She has toured with some of Christian music's most legendary performers, including Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith, and provided background vocals on scores of other projects. She has choreographed for The Newsboys and acted with Carman. And of course she is the voice of the Larry-Boy Theme Song. Through it all, Mullen has remained humble, an attribute that has made fans even hungrier for her music.
