The Seattle grunge movement of the 1990s witnessed the emergence of the influential alternative rock of Nirvana. The band from Aberdeen, Washington quickly gained immense popularity dominating the charts worldwide. With lead singer Kurt Cobain being dubbed as the “spokesman of a generation”, the group soon began to despise their fame and attention becoming anti-rock stars. The unexpected death of Kurt Cobain put an end to Nirvana’s career in 1994, however the band’s legacy lives on as one of the most powerful in rock and roll history.

selic, both fans of The Melvins, met in 1985 at one of their band practices. Sharing an interest in the same music, the two formed the Stiff Woodies later changing their name several times to Skid Row, Pen Cap Chew, Ted Ed Fred, and finally Nirvana in 1987. The band; Kurt Cobain (vocals, guitar), Krist Novoselic (bass), and Chad Channing (drums), developed their fan base playing parties in Olympia. They eventually made several demos with producer Jack Endino who later played the recordings for Jonathan Poneman, a co-founder of the indie label Sub Pop. Nirvana was immediately signed releasing their first single “Love Buzz” in December 1988. Their debut album, Bleach, was issued shortly afterwards becoming a hit on college radio stations and selling 35,000 copies.

Nirvana began working on their follow-up album in 1990 with producer Butch Vig. While recording, Kurt and Krist agreed that a new drummer was needed as they were unsatisfied with Channing. They eventually hired Dave Grohl, a former member of the punk band Scream. Signed by DGC Records, Nevermind was released in 1991 becoming an uncalculated mass commercial success featuring the hits “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, “Lithium”, and “In Bloom”. The album peaked at number one on the Billboard Music Chart Top 200 and was certified gold and platinum just two months after its release. In February 1992, Kurt married Courtney Love who in August gave birth to their child Frances Bean. In December of the same year the band released Incesticide, which included a collection of B-sides and rarities, to put an end to the circulating illegal bootlegs of their unreleased recordings.

Nirvana’s third studio album, In Utero was issued in September 1993 and is considered one of their best efforts despite its weaker-than expected sales. The album was intended to be less mainstream and targeted more towards their core fanbase of punk and indie rockers. Nevertheless, In Utero debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and featured the hit singles “Heart Shaped Box”, “Rape Me”, and “All Apologies”. The band proceeded by embarking on an American tour joined by former Germs guitarist Pat Smear. Later that year the group performed a live acoustic show on MTV Unplugged which revealed the strength and intensity of Cobain’s songwriting ability.

During their 1994 European tour, Kurt became severely ill with bronchitis and laryngitis and was prescribed Rohypnol. The morning following his diagnosis, Cobain was found unconscious resulting from a combination of the prescription drug and alcohol, however many believed the incident to be his first suicide attempt. With the tour cancelled, Cobain’s previous heroin addiction resurfaced forcing his family and friends to convince him to seek help in rehab. Kurt agreed to the intervention however after less than a week in rehab he escaped and returned to his home in Seattle. On April 8, 1994, Cobain was found dead in his garage by an electrician. Although it was reported that Kurt died of a self-inflicted gun wound, there is much controversy surrounding his sudden supposed suicide based on the many unanswered questions within the Seattle Police Department’s report. Several sources consider that he may have been murdered.

MTV Unplugged in New York was released November 1, 1994 debuting at number one on the US and UK album charts. The video Live Tonight! Sold Out! which features footage of live performances and interviews was issued a few days later. In October 1996, From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah, a compilation of concert recordings spanning from 1989 to 1994, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Meanwhile Dave Grohl formed his own group, the Foo Fighters, releasing their self-titled album in 1995 and Novoselic formed Sweet 75 issuing their debut in 1997. In 2002 the Nirvana “best of” compilation was released containing the previously unreleased track “You Know You’re Right”. The Nirvana box set, With The Lights Out appeared in November 2004 featuring early demos, rehearsal recordings, and live tracks. Silver: The Best of the Box followed in 2005 containing previously unreleased material along with 19 tracks from With The Lights Out.
