Oval gradually became the work of just Popp, with Metzger providing most of the visual and design work. All three, however, are regarded as pioneers of glitch, a genre of music that embraces the sound of damaged audio produced by the destroyed digital equipment. Eschewing the use of synthesizers, Oval instead deliberately mutilated CDs by writing on them with felt pens, then processed the array of fragmented sounds to create a very rhythmic electronic style. Popp brought this approach to bear on the first full-length Oval releases — Wohnton, Systemische and 94 Diskont — as well as a number of compilation tracks. Although the albums barely registered commercially, even in Oval's home country, Popp continued his work, creating remixes of Chicago post-rock group Tortoise, which brought them some attention in the United States and resulted in the release of Systemische and 94 Diskont domestically. In 1997, the Dok LP featured Oval's collaboration with Christophe Charles. It was followed in 1999 by the Szenario EP. Markus Popp continues to release albums under the name Oval.
