Papa Roach music biography continued...
California fan base. Papa Roach originally consisted of four teenage friends—Coby Dick (vocals), Jerry Horton (guitar), Dave Buckner (drums), and Will James (bass). In 1996, after getting consistent local exposure, the band replaced bass player James with Tobin Esperance and hired a manager, soon after recording their first LP, Old Friends from Young Years. Local radio started playing the album and it proved to be extremely popular in Northern California. That led to led to more prominent concerts, including dates with Suicidal Tendencies, Sevendust, and Powerman 5000, and a deal with Dreamworks Records, which released Papa Roach's second album, Infest, in early 2000. The album went triple platinum due to the success of the single "Last Resort." Two years later, frontman Coby Dick opted to go by his given name of Jacoby Shaddix. A second album, lovehatetragedy, appeared in June 2002. Though it didn't outsell Infest, it managed to chart higher in both the United States and United Kingdom album charts, making Papa Roach a bona fide national success story. The group made a name for itself internationally after touring Europe in support of their third album, Getting Away With Murder.
In September 2006 Papa Roach released their 4th major-label album The Paramour Sessions (recorded at the Paramour mansion). The album marked a more alternative rock/pop rock-based sound compared to earlier efforts but still contained the softer ballads akin to Getting Away With Murder. The album debuted at #16 on the Billboard 200 Charts. In a 2008 interview on a rock radio station in Columbus, OH, Jacoby Shaddix stated that the band is currently working on their new album, which was to be titled Days of War, Nights of Love, but for different reasons was renamed Metamorphosis. The band will also be playing with a new drummer—Tony Palermo will be taking over for Buckner—but hopes to keep its signature sound. "We're a band that tries to walk that line between metal, hardcore, punk rock and pop music, and we do our best at trying to make it all tasteful," said Shaddix. Most fans would whole heartedly agree that they have succeeded.
