Paper Lace: The Night Chicago Died-#1-1974: Hailing from England,
Paper Lace had just reached the top of the charts in the U.K. with the original version of “Billy, Don’t Be A Hero” earlier in 1974, a song written by their producers Mitch Murray and Peter Callander. Unfortunately an American group, Bo Donaldson & the Heywood’s had done a cover version of the song and won out in the states to make it a #1 for them while Paper Laces version would peak at #96. All was not lost however as Murray & Callander came up with another ditty, “
The Night Chicago Died”, based around the Al Capone story that would rocket it’s way to the top of the U.S. chart in August of 74’ and be a certified gold million seller for the group. And that would be the last single by the band to reach the top 40 and within a year they would have gone altogether.
