on November 6, 1966, the singer got her start in the early '80s as a backup singer for band leader Bill Summers and the funk group Con Funk Shun. Pebbles co-penned "Body Lovers," one of the latter group's hits, but by the end of the 80s wanted to pursue her own solo career. She signed a contract with MCA, and released a self-titled debut album in 1988, which featured contributions from Babyface and yielded a pair of Top Five hits, "Girlfriend" and "Mercedes Boy," which pushed the album to platinum status in the U.S. Pebbles' follow-up recording, 1990's Always, fared nearly as well, going gold and spawning another Top Five hit with "Giving You the Benefit." At the height of her fame, Pebbles stepped aside from her singing career, founded a record label, and signed and became manager for the hip hop/dance supergroup TLC. Pebbles returned to her singing career in 1995 with her third release, Straight From the Heart, which featured songwriting contributions from Sean "Puffy" Combs. Despite this, the album failed commercially. In 2000, the Hip-O label released a 14-track career overview, but Pebbles had lost her taste for the music industry. She eventually became a Christian minister under the name of Sister Perri.
