Pepe Aguilar music biography continued...
in San Antonio, Texas, Aguilar was influenced and supported by his parents to start singing at a young age, performing on stage for the first time at the age of three and appearing at New York's Madison Square Garden two years later. Aguilar's first album was the 1990 fusion of mariachi and pop called, Pepe Aguilar Con Tambora. His velvety voice and distinctive interpretation immediately struck a chord, but he wouldn't break through totally until 1998's Por Mujeres Como Tú, a collection of previously unreleased tracks that went on to spend a year at the top of the Latin and Mexican charts and sell nearly 2 million copies. The album's title track won Billboard's Hot Latin Track of the year and made Aguilar a household name. Two years later, another studio album, Por Una Mujer Bonita, won a Grammy award for Best regional Mexican album. The follow-up album, 1999's Por una Mujer Bonita, earned Aguilar a Grammy for Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album. Other highlights of Aguilar's career include 2005's Historias de Mi Tierra which won a Grammy for Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album and a Latin Grammy for Best Ranchero Album and his 2006 release, 100% Mexicano, which won him a Grammy for Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album. He continued to rack up awards with 2006's Enamorado, which earned him a Latin Grammy for Best Ranchero Album.
With 5 Grammys, 16 studio albums, and over 10 million records sold, Aguilar has actually eclipsed his famous parents. A purveyor of new music as well as an adamant advocate of history and tradition, Aguilar continues to alternately record new material as well as classics, keeping the past alive and defining the future of ranchera music.
