Hailed as "one of the realest niggas you will ever know," the rapper Plies overcame adversity as a youngster to become one of the most popular hip hop acts ever to come out of South Florida. Born Algernod Lanier Washington in Fort Myers, Florida on, Plies grew up in a public housing, where he learned just how mean the streets can be firsthand. beginning. It wasn't until he became frustrated trying to teach one of his artists a particular hook that Plies grabbed the mic. The song, "Tell Dem Krackers Dat," spread quickly through South Florida and fell into the lap of Miami-based powerhouse Slip-N-Slide. In 2004, impressed by Plies' talent, the nationally distributed label made him an offer he couldn't refuse. His debut album, The Real Testament was released in August 2007. It boasted the hit single, "Shawty" a breezy, mid-tempo tune in which Plies and fellow Florida boy T-Pain serenade their ghetto queens. “Shawty” topped the hip hop charts and became one of the most played songs on the radio in the nation. Plies second single, "Hypnotized" featured Akon. The third single from his debut album was "I Am the Club." The album has since been certified gold.
Plies released his second album, Definition of Real, in June 2008, 10 months after releasing his first album. The first official single was "Bust It Baby Pt. 2", featuring Ne-Yo. It topped the hip hop charts, also beating his other single, "Shawty", as the best single up to date for Plies. The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200. Since the release of the album, Plies has also been involved in creating a reality program to find his one true love. Thousands of women turned out in Gainesville, Florida to audition for the program called “Bust It Baby.” And despite attracting his share of controversy, this rapper from the Dirty South will see his talent prevail; at least that’s what his fans are hoping.
