Pointer Sisters music biography continued...

Performances at Los Angeles clubs led to a record deal and a1973 debut album which yielded "Yes We Can, Can," a single which reached #11 on the pop singles chart. Over the next few years, the sisters experimented with genres ranging from country to R&B, but in 1979 they signed with Planet Records and decided to record a rock 'n' roll album. The group's debut single, a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Fire," went all the way to #2 on the pop charts and went gold. Boosted by "Fire," the Energy album was certified gold and went on to spawn another top single with "Happiness". In 1980, the group released the gold-certified Special Things; it featured the song "He's So Shy" that went to #3 and gold status. In 1981, the group released Black & White, which included one of the biggest hits of the year, "Slow Hand." The single topped out at #2 on the Billboard charts, and became an anthem for women across the country. But the Pointer Sisters' biggest breakthrough would be with Breakout, an album released 1983 which yielded such mega-hits as "Automatic" (#5 pop), "Jump (for my love) (#3 pop), "Neutron Dance," (#6 pop) and "I'm So Excited," which also made it to the Top Ten. The Pointer Sisters also became the first black act to be featured prominently on MTV, and with that boost, became superstars.

The Pointer Sisters received Grammy Awards for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for "Jump (For My Love)", and Best Vocal Arrangement for Two or More Voices for "Automatic," but these singles would mark the end of their run of Top Ten hits. They subsequently signed with RCA, and their releases "Dare Me" in 1985 and "Goldmine" in 1986, reaching numbers 11 and 33 respectively. In recent years the sisters have maintained a lower public profile but have continued to perform, even as many newer acts cover their hits. The sisters were inducted to the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2005, capping what has been an illustrious career.
