Pussycat music biography continued...
with a well-received repertoire of German-language songs. They went through several different incarnations and finally emerged as Pussycat with drummer Theo Coumans, bassist Theo Wetzels, and guitarist John Theunissen in 1975. Signing to the EMI label, they recorded a tune called "Mississippi," which became a huge hit, landing them on the charts across Europe and England, where it reached number one in August 1976. The band had one further UK hit, "Smile," before they petered out in that country, but continued to remain strong in Europe. In1978 Hans Lutjens replaced Theo Coumans on drums, as the band continued to release albums and tour worldwide. But by the beginning of the 1980s, the sisters found it increasingly difficult to pay for their extravagant tours with a number of musicians supporting them. They replaced their backing band with taped music, and reinvented themselves once again. They continued to play and record through the mid-'80s when they finally, and amicably, decided to split and pursue solo careers. By this time, Pussycat had been together ten years and produced seventeen albums, demonstrating that they were, indeed, musical tigers.
