One of the most popular pop acts to come out of Mexico, RBD stared a revolution in the Latin American music industry that was unparalleled. The group developed in 2004 as an offshoot of the soap opera, Rebelde, which was shot in Mexico City. Most of this group’s members, Mayte, Alfonso Herrera, Christopher, Christián, Anahí and Dulce María, had already made some inroads in the musical field, except for Maite Perroni; however, none of them achieved nearly as much success as they did with RBD. ed such big RBD songs as “Rebelde,” “Sólo quédate en silencio,” “Sálvame” and “Un poco de tu amor.” They earned Gold, Platinum and Diamond status in Mexico with this album, selling more than half a million copies, making them one of the few to earn the country’s “Mexico in the Skin” Award. They followed the release of this album with a highly successful national tour in Mexico called “Tour Generación RBD” which featured performances in different parts of the country and brought in more than 10 million fans. The group then produced a live CD and DVD under this same name, which generated even more exposure.
In 2005 RBD released their second CD production, “Nuestro Amor,” which sold 127,000 units a few hours after hitting markets. The catchy title track shot to #1 in Mexico, where it stayed there for four consecutive weeks. The song peaked at #2 on Billboard Hot Latin Pop Airplay chart and #6 on Billboard's Top 50 Latin Tracks and Latin Tropical Airplay chart. With other RBD songs like “Feliz Cumpleaños,” “Este corazón” and “Así soy yo,” it helped to bring RBD a Platinum disc. The album also signified the group’s breakout north of the border, as the album itself hit #1 on the Hot Latin Albums chart on Billboard. Since then, the album has been certified Platinum for shipping more than 200,000 copies.
RBD music mania has continued with more than just discs, tours, and DVDs. The Mexican group has licensed other merchandise including games, calendars, candy, key chains, and much more. Riding a wave of popularity even though their TV program was cancelled, RBD seems poised to stay. The group that has sold more than 9.5 million albums around the world in less than two years, won numerous awards, and have promised to stay around as long as their fans want them. RBD is not a merely a flavor of the moment or fad; they are a group that are set to dominant the Latin American music world indefinitely.
