Rascal Flatts Biography (Continued) |
heer persistence and pursuit in realizing his dream of becoming a musician. In 1992 the Columbus, Ohio native moved to Nashville, Tennessee in the hopes of furthering his music career. He eventually landed a record deal as part of the Christian group East to West. A few years later, he persuaded his cousin Gary to join him in Nashville to pursue their lifelong dream of starting a band. They landed a permanent gig playing a club in Nashville’s Printer’s Alley along with a part-time guitarist. Meanwhile, Jay also played in Chely Wright’s band with Joe Don Rooney who was later asked to join the cousins one night when their part-time guitarist was unavailable. All three were amazed by the resulting sound and decided to record a few demos. Shortly afterwards, they were noticed by Lyric Street Senior VP Doug Howard who immediately signed them to the label.
Their self-titled debut was issued in 2000 selling an impressive three million copies and peaking in the third position on the US country charts with the four Top Ten singles “Prayin’ for Daylight”, “This Everyday Love”, “While You Loved Me”, and “I’m Movin’ On”. The later won the ACM Song of the Year Award in 2001. The follow-up, Melt, appeared in 2002 featuring the hit track “These Days” which topped the Hot Country Singles at number one. Rooney’s nude debut in the video for the single “I Melt” stirred up some controversy leading the group to release an edited version as the original was banned on television. The third album, Feels Like Today peaked at number one on both the US Billboard 200 and the US Top Country Album charts. The album’s number one single “Bless the Broken Road” earned the 2005 Grammy Award for Country Song of the Year. Their most recent album, Me and the Gang was issued April 4, 2006 and includes the number one single “What Hurts the Most”. The album has topped the US Country and Billboard charts, and as of August 2006 has been certified double platinum.
