Ricardo Arjona music biography continued...
Guatemala, Arjona tried a number of occupations before settling on music, something he had loved since boyhood. He moved to Mexico City to pursue the greater opportunities available there and eventually landed a contract with Polygram, which released his first album Dejame Decir que Te Amo (Let Me Say I Love You) inna 1988. The compilation of love ballads flopped and Arjona lost his contract and labored in obscurity while writing and composing the songs of protest that were closest to his heart. By now, music of this type was deemed to have broader commercial appeal, and Arjona landed a contract with Sony, which put out his album Animal Nocturno in 1993. It became a critical and popular success and put Arjona on a path to superstardom. Sony has since released new albums by the artist every year or two throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s. His work has found widespread popularity among Spanish-speaking audiences around the world. His album Animal Nocturno landed on the Billboard Latin pop charts in 1993, where he has appeared regularly since, hitting the number-one position in 2000 with Galeria Caribe. The latter album featured "Mesias," a cautionary tale about terrorism that landed in the Billboard Top 20 Hot Latin Tracks, and made a controversial name for Arjona internationally.
Arjona continues to make his musical contributions to the international community in the new millennium. In 2002 Arjona released Santo Pecado, a highly personal effort that chronicled, among other things, his breakup with his wife of 12 years. He has since won two Grammy Awards from three nominations: The 2007 Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album and the 2006 Latin Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Album, both for his album Adentro, (2005). Arjona has described danger as the spice that makes his life and his music interesting. "An excess of tranquility and peace can be your enemy if you're trying to write," he once told a reporter. He now lives in Mexico City, one of the world's most densely populated and crime-ridden cities, where he continues to create socially relevant music that makes the world think.
