Illinois in 1999 with a lineup consisting of Tim McIlrath (vocals, guitar), Joe Principe (bass guitar), Mr. Precision (guitar and vocals) and Tony Tintari (drums). After some line-up changes and a few independently released albums, Rise Against was signed to Geffen Records and had their breakthrough album, Siren Song of the Counter Culture, released in August 2004. The group then embarked on a relentless period of touring throughout North America, Europe, Australia and Japan. In 2005, Rise Against appeared in the skateboarding film Lords of Dogtown, playing an old-school Cali punk band. They continued to tour throughout that summer, including a spot at the U.K.'s Reading and Leeds festivals in August. When Rise Against's next album, The Sufferer & the Witness, came out in July 2006, it reached #10 on the Billboard 200 and has since gone Platinum in Canada, with such hits as "Give It All", "Swing Life Away", "Ready to Fall", "Prayer of the Refugee", "The Good Left Undone" and "Re-Education (Through Labor)". Rise Against's most recent studio album, Appeal to Reason, was released in North America in October 2008. The band's lineup presently consists of Tim McIlrath (vocals, guitar), Joe Principe (bass guitar), Brandon Barnes (drums), and Zach Blair (guitar). All of the members of the band are vegetarians and active supporters of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, demonstrating that they are as principled as they are committed to their own vision of hardcore punk.
