Rob Thomas music biography continued...
a US military base, Thomas relocated to Orlando, Florida as a youngster. In 1993, he helped form the group Tabitha's Secret, which later morphed into the rock band Matchbox Twenty with Thomas as the lead singer and chief lyricist. Matchbox Twenty released their debut album, Yourself or Someone Like You, off Atlantic Records in 1996. While their first single, "Long Day", was a rock radio-only hit, the album soon spun off several Top 40 hit singles throughout 1997 and 1998, including "Push", "3 A.M.", "Real World", and "Back 2 Good". The album eventually went on to sell over 12 million copies in the U.S. alone, earning diamond status. Before recording their second album, Rob Thomas collaborated with Itaal Shur on a song called "Smooth" for Carlos Santana's comeback album, Supernatural. The song had a pop-tinged Latin beat and showcased Thomas' lyrical prowess. Thomas was supposed to act as only a songwriter on "Smooth", but Carlos Santana had him sing on it after hearing the song's demo. "Smooth" was the album's lead single and became a hit in 1999; Thomas earned four Grammys for writing and performing on "Smooth", Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Vocal Performance, Male, and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, making him a superstar in his own right.
With Thomas at the helm, Matchbox Twenty came back with the album Mad Season in 2000, which spawned the AC hit "If You're Gone" and More Than You Think You Are in 2002, which yielded the hit singles, "Disease", "Unwell", and "Bright Lights". April 19, 2005, after nearly 10 years with Matchbox Twenty, Thomas began his solo career with the release of ...Something to Be, which shot to #1 on the album chart. This marked the first time a male artist from a rock and/or pop group had debuted at number one with his first solo album since the Billboard Top 200 was introduced 50 years previously. Thomas continues to record with Matchbox Twenty and as a solo artist, always demonstrating his undeniable creative curiosity and talent.
