Robert Plant music biography continued...

England, Page became interested in singing, primarily in the blues, at a young age and played with John Bonham in the group Band of Joy. In 1968, he was tapped by Jimmy Page to be lead vocalist in his new group the New Yardbirds, which would later become known as Led Zeppelin. Their first album was released in February 1969; within two months it had reached Billboard's Top 10. Led Zeppelin II reached Number One two months after its release, and after that every album of new material went platinum with five of the group's LPs have reaching Number One. After touring almost incessantly during its first two years together, Zeppelin began limiting its appearances to alternating years. The band's 1973 U.S. tour broke box-office records throughout the country (many of which had been set by the Beatles), and by 1975 its immense ticket and album sales had made Led Zeppelin the most popular rock & roll group in the world.

In 1980, following the deaths of Plant's young son and drummer Bonham, the group disbanded, but Plant continued to record as a solo artist, beginning with Pictures at Eleven in 1982, followed by 1983's The Principle of Moments. Popular tracks from this period include "Big Log" (a Top 20 hit in 1983), "In the Mood" (1984), "Little by Little" (from 1985's Shaken 'n' Stirred), "Tall Cool One" (a #25 hit off 1988's Now and Zen). Plant and Page occasionally collaborated on various projects, including The Honeydrippers: Volume 1 album in 1984, and became a full-fledged performing act from 1994 through 1998. In 2002, with his then newly-formed band Strange Sensation, Plant released a widely acclaimed collection of mostly blues and folk remakes, Dreamland, and a second album, containing new, original songs called ReArranger (2005). Both have received some of the most favorable reviews of Plant's solo career and four Grammy nominations, two in 2003 and two in 2006. In 2005, as part of Led Zeppelin, Plant won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and came back with bluegrass star and collaborator Alison Kraus to win four Grammy's for their album Raising Sand in 2008. Over forty years since his debut with Led Zeppelin, Plant remains as vital musically as ever.
