Robyn music biography continued...
Carlsson in Stockholm on June 12, 1979, Robyn spent the first seven years of her life touring with her director father and actress mother in their Constructivist-inspired theatre company. At the age of 13 she was discovered by Swedish pop singer Meja when singing a sad, self-written song about her parents' divorce in a school workshop and was immediately signed to BMG. A debut album of R&B-influenced pop in 1995 saw her paired with future Britney-hitmaker Max Martin, and the global success of the sweet, soulful single 'Show Me Love' in 1997 cemented Robyn as an international pop star. Disappointed by the lack of artistic control offered by her label, however, Robyn migrated to Jive records for her third album, but was disappointed in the way they attempted to market her music in the United States. In 2003, she worked with a Swedish brother-sister duo, The Knife, on a groundbreaking single, "Who's That Girl," but Jive hated it. Totally disgusted, Robyn started her own label, Konichiwa Records, in 2005. Another single, "Be Mine" and her fourth, self-titled album arrived later that year and earned several Swedish Grammys, including Best Album, Best Female Pop Artist, and Best Songwriter.
The album Robyn was released in the U.K. in 2007, as was the single "Konichiwa Bitches." The ballad "With Every Heartbeat" really reestablished Robyn in the U.K., reaching number one on the singles chart that summer. The single "Rakamonie" was finally released in the U.S. in early 2008, while the album Robyn was released in the U.S. in the spring of 2008. The album Robyn, in some ways, is emblematic of a move towards a more independent pop industry, with artists working creatively in equal partnerships rather than at the behest of a major corporation. ."I think it's the future," Robyn herself has said. "I don't think you're gonna have big record companies in five years. Even three. They have not adapted to this new world where people download music or don't buy stuff that they don't like." Clearly, fans around the world have chosen Robyn's offerings as music they like.
