Savage Garden music biography continued...

fame at the threshold of the new millennium. The two, which met through newspaper advertisement, took a name from fantasy author Anne Rice's term for the savage and isolated world of vampires. They began sending out demo tapes all over the world and the only positive response came from Australian manager John Woodruff. He put the duo in the studio with Australian producer Charles Fisher, who had previously created international breakthrough hits for Air Supply and Moving Pictures and the first single, "I Want You," released in July 1996 reached number two on the Australian charts. It was followed by consecutive number ones with "To the Moon and Back" and "Truly Madly Deeply." A Dallas, Texas radio station began playing I Want You" and before they knew it, Savage Garden had been signed to Sony Records. I Want You" and "Truly Madly Deeply" became worldwide hits, the latter achieving number one in the U.S. in January 1998. The album sold 11 million copies globally and earned Savage Garden ten Australian ARIA Awards, cementing their status as superstars at home and abroad.

In February 1999, "The Animal Song" (featured in the Touchstone film The Other Sister) became a hit in Australia and the US. That September saw the release of a new single previewing their forthcoming album; the smooth, romantic ballad, "I Knew I Loved You". In November of that year, the duo's second album, Affirmation, was released around the world. It went platinum in the US in one month, largely due to the success of the single "I Knew I Loved You," which hit #1 on the charts, eventually going platinum and becoming the most-played single on US radio for the year. The group finished out 1999 by winning two Billboard Music Awards: Adult Contemporary Single of the Year and Hot 100 Singles Airplay of the Year. In 2001, the duo officially split to pursue solo careers, but not before leaving a hugely popular body of work.
