The Scissor Sisters, (named after a lesbian sex act), first caught the attention of UK audiences with their cover of Pink Floyd's '"Comfortably Numb," which led to a contract with Polydor/UK. The group toured Europe and Great Britain in early 2004 to back their self-titled debut album, which contained such power-packed Scissor Sisters songs as "Take Your Mama", "Laura", "Mary" and "Filthy/ Gorgeous." The album ultimately reached #1 on the UK Albums Chart and became the best selling album of 2004, As of 2006, it was the 10th biggest-selling album of the 21st century, and the 51st biggest-selling of all time in the UK. Although the British media pointed out that the Scissor Sisters 'stick out like a sore thumb' on the list of artists who have sold over 2 million copies of an album in the UK in the 21st century, (the others being James Blunt, Robbie Williams, Keane, Dido, Coldplay and Norah Jones), their radio friendly tracks, backed by outlandish stage antics, helped the Scissor Sisters scoop Best International Group, International Album and International Breakthrough Act at the 2005 BRIT Awards. The band opened the show with a memorable performance that included 25 foot puppets made by the Jim Henderson studio.
Recording of The Sisters second album, Ta-Dah, began in mid-May 2005 with sneak previews of new songs played at live shows, including "Everybody Wants the Same Thing", performed at the Live 8 concert, "Paul McCartney", "I Can't Decide", "Hybrid Man", "Forever Right Now" and "Hair Baby" (a title which refers to the phenomenon of tumors containing partially formed fetuses). The Sisters also realized a dream by collaborating with Elton John, their spiritual godfather, on the album. Ta-Dah reached #1 on the UK Charts in its first week of release. While the band has also made inroads in Latin America, North America has been slow to respond to their material. Given the band's irrepressible spirit, however, this is likely to change soon.
