Seether music biography continued...
and consisted of Shaun Morgan (vocals, guitar), Dale Stewart (bass), and John Humphrey (guitar). Originally gaining notoriety with local audiences by playing at small clubs and universities, the band ultimately released their first album, Fragile on Musketeer Records, in 2000 in South Africa. Upon achieving success on the South African music charts, Wind-up Records took an interest in Saron Gas' melodic-yet-heavy sound and signed them to the label. The band was asked to change their name, however, due to Saron Gas's similarity to the lethal nerve gas sarin.. The band chose the name Seether, inspired by a single by the band Veruca Salt. Seether's full-length debut, issued in the summer of 2002, was called Disclaimer and featured the modern rock single "Fine Again." It led to a year-long tour that solidified their status as a rising metal band.
While touring ensured increasing commercial demand for Seether, it also delayed the band's return to the studio. The band's promised sophomore follow-up, Karma and Effect, did not materialize until May 2005, when it entered the Top Ten on the US Billboard 200 album charts and went on to be certified gold in the US and Canada. The album spawned three singles, "Remedy", "Truth" and "The Gift". "Remedy" reached number 1 of the US Mainstream Rock Charts, becoming the band's first number 1 single. In August 2006, Morgan went into alcohol and drug rehab, but when he emerged, the band put together their third album, 2007's Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces. The first single "Fake It" reached the top position in both US Mainstream Rock Charts and Modern Rock Charts, remaining on top for at least 9 weeks on both charts. Despite the fame, frontman Morgan remains philosophical: "I don't care if no one knows what I look like," he says. "That's not the point. The point is to know I've touched people." Seether certainly has.
