D.C. when English major Carl "Groove" Martin and music student Darnell Van Rensalier were pledging the fraternity of Alpha Phi Alpha. The two started performing together as a duo, but later settled on the idea of a quartet and recruited zoology major Marc Gay and Van Rensalier's ex-roommate Garfield Bright into the project. Martin wrote the song "If I Ever Fall in Love" and the group entered it in a listener appreciation contest on Washington, D.C. radio station WPGC. The tune won the contest and was soon heard on several radio stations throughout the country, leading Shai to a record deal with Gasoline Alley, a division of MCA Records. Shai released "If I Ever Fall In Love" as a single in the fall of 1992, and it was as popular nationally as it was in the group's hometown, reaching #2 on the pop charts. The group's 1992 debut album by the same name broke into the Top Ten in both R&B and pop charts, finally going double platinum in the following year. Shai capitalized on their national popularity with a number of live performances, including a European tour. Early in 1993, the group was given an invitation to perform at the Presidential Inauguration which Shai accepted. By this time, their status as not only talented performers, but sex symbols as well, was cemented.
When the group returned to make their second full length album, Shai spent a great deal more time to craft their new songs than they had with their debut. Their nine-month effort resulted in 1995's Blackface, which was aimed at a more mature audience. Although the album fell short of sales predictions, Shai forged on. 1999's album Destiny was recorded without Carl Martin (who left the group after Blackface release), and their latest 2004 studio album Back From The Mystery System ... The Love Cycle was done with new Shai member - Erik Willis. . In 2008 Garfield A. Bright and Darnell Van Rensalier released their duet album "Worldwide" as "D-n-G of Shai" on label Fight 4 Mu (ALIVE) in Germany, bringing their careers full circle.
