Scottish 1980s pop star Sheena Easton became an instant celebrity on the British reality TV show The Big Time: Pop Singer in which she won a recording contract with EMI. She went on to produce several Top Ten hits, later focusing on an acting career appearing in several episodes of Miami Vice and eventually starred in several Broadway revivals notably Man of La Mancha and Grease.

r aunt and uncle’s 25th anniversary celebration. Despite her vocal talent, Sheena did not consider singing as a future career until she saw the Barbra Streisand film The Way We Were. From that point onwards she aspired to become a singer. She was awarded a scholarship at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow studying to be a speech and drama teacher as she believed the curriculum to be most beneficial in becoming a professional singer. On her time off, she performed with the band Something Else in local night clubs. In 1979, she married Sandi Easton and divorced after a short eight months keeping the Easton name. Later that year she was selected to appear in the documentary film The Big Time which followed the experiences of an unknown singer’s rise to music stardom. The documentary resulted in an EMI produced single “Modern Girl”.
“Modern Girl” was initially released before the show aired however did not receive much attention. Her second single “9 to 5” was issued after The Big Time premiered peaking in the 3rd position on the charts. The success of “9 to 5” caused “Modern Girl” to re-enter the charts and become a major hit scoring in the Top Ten. When “9 to 5” was issued in the US it required a name change as Dolly Parton had a prior hit single of the same title. In 1981, “Morning Train (9 to 5)” became a number one hit on the US Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary charts. “Modern Girl”, however did not perform as well peaking at number 18. Later that year she released “For Your Eyes Only”, the theme song for the James Bond movie and won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
Following the release of several unsuccessful albums, Sheena experienced a major comeback with Best Kept Secret in 1983. The lead single “Telefone (Long Distance Love Affair) became a Top Ten hit. In 1984, she collaborated with Prince on her biggest selling US album A Private Heaven. Her new sexy pop star image evident in the hit singles “Strut” and “Sugar Walls” initiated some controversy especially in the music video for the latter. Her debut Spanish album, Todo Me Recuerda a Ti (“Everything Reminds Me of You”), also released in 1984 received much praise with the Grammy winning single “Me Gustas Tal Como Eres”. The late 1980s witnessed Easton’s declining success with the subsequent releases Do You, No Sound But a Heart, and Eternity. However, her appearance on Prince’s hit “U Got the Look” managed to sustain her reputation a little while longer.
In November of 1987, Easton made her acting debut on Miami Vice playing a singer named Caitlin Davies for five episodes. Her song “Follow My Rainbow” was featured on the Miami Vice soundtrack as well as on her tenth album, The Lover in Me, which was certified gold. Her last album to chart in the United States was What Comes Naturally in 1991. Sheena continued to release albums, her most recent in 2001, however the majority of them have only been marketed in Europe and the Far East.
