Shimon Moore (vocals/lead guitar) and Emma Anzai (bass), who later added Chris Mileski (drums), who was subsequently replaced by Mark Goodwin. Sick Puppies started attracting national attention when their song "Nothing Really Matters" won Triple J's Unearthed in 2000. Later that year, they released their debut album called Welcome to the Real World and were voted for "Best Live Performance" at a rock festival in Sydney. Leaving their record label they released another EP independently called 'Fly'. The Australian edition of Rolling Stone at this time called Sick Puppies "the most dynamic new band in the country," but they had yet to meet with widespread acclaim.



In 2005 the Sick Puppies made the move to the LA, seeking a record deal in the US. While taking meetings, performing showcase gigs for recording companies, and recording their next album, Shimon Moore created a video get-well card of his friend - Juan Mann - offering Free Hugs to passers-by in Sydney. He used one of the songs finished from the sessions for their album in progress - "All the Same" - as a soundtrack. The video was also posted on YouTube and became an instant sensation, spawning the Free Hugs Campaign and resulting in TV appearances on 60 minutes, Good Morning America, Oprah and Jay Leno and an American record deal with Virgin. Their debut album, Dressed Up as Life, debuted at #4 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart and stayed in the Top Ten for eighteen weeks. With the release of the album the band began touring the US consistently - first as a support act to bands like Breaking Benjamin and Evanescence and then as headliners, returning to Australia only briefly before continuing their American tour in support of Dressed Up as Life. "The record is an honest reflection of what we were feeling and going through when we were making it," singer and guitarist Moore has said. "There were times when we were really depressed and then suddenly we were happy. So these songs capture that whole rollercoaster ride." The Sick Puppies' fans are hanging on for the ride, too.
