Silverchair music biography continued...
Daniel Johns and drummer Ben Gillies started making music together at primary school. Schoolmate Chris Joannou later joined on bass. The group got their big break in mid-1984 when they won a national demo competition called "Pick Me," with a song called "Tomorrow." The tune, which led to a recording contract, eventually spent six weeks at #1 on the Australian singles charts and in 1995 it became the most played song of the year on U.S. modern rock radio. Silverchair's debut album Frogstomp, recorded in just nine days in early 1995, was a #1 hit in Australia and New Zealand. The disc went on to become the first Australian album since INXS to hit the U.S. top ten, selling more than 2.5 million copies throughout the world. In between their school studies Silverchair toured and recorded their second album, Freak Show, which went gold in the United States with global sales eventually exceeding 1.5 million copies. After finally graduating from school the band were able to spend much more time creating their critically lauded breakthrough, "Neon Ballroom" which was released in March 1999. Silverchair toured extensively in support of the album propelling it to even stronger worldwide sales than they had achieved with "Freak Show," and proving that they were a legitimate rock happening and not just a fad. Their next album, 2002's Diorama, garnered the band multiple ARIA Awards that year, including Best Rock Album and Best Group.
A year after their most stunning success the band went on hiatus, but they came back together in 2005 put on a benefit concert for victims of the prior year's devastating tsunami. They soon began work on a new album, funding the recording themselves to remove the added label pressures from the past; the resulting Young Modern came out in early 2007. Young Modern became the fifth Silverchair album to top the ARIA Albums chart.
