Sister Sledge music biography continued...
got their start singing in a church choir. They recorded their first single, "Time Will Tell," for the Philly-based Money Back label. In 1972, Sister Sledge signed with Atco and recorded its second single, "Weatherman," which was followed by the Jackson 5-like "Mama Never Told Me" in 1973. The group's first U.S. hit came in 1974 with "Love, Don't You Go Through No Changes on Me" which peaked at number 31 on the R&B charts. Their debut album, Circle of Love, came soon after and was followed by 1977's sophomore effort, Together, which yielded the number 61 R&B hit "Blockbuster Boy." Teaming with Chic leaders and producers Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, Sister Sledge became superstars in 1979 with the album We Are Family, which spawned the hit title track and the single "He's the Greatest Dancer" which both soared to #1 on the R&B charts and #2 on the pop side. The new queens of disco came back in 1980 with Love Somebody Today, which was also produced by the Rodgers/Edwards team, and spawned the #6 R&B single "Got to Love Somebody." Sister Sledge switched producers and worked with Narada Michael Walden, who produced 1981's All American Girls. The title song was a number three R&B hit, and in 1982, Sister Sledge had a number 14 R&B hit with a cover of Mary Wells' "My Guy" that appeared on The Sisters, and cemented Sister Sledge as a group with durable talent.
The sisters' popularity began to wane in the mid to late 80s, but they continued to record, scoring sporadic hits with such songs as "Lost in Music", "Love Somebody Today," "Reach Your Peak" and the international gold record, "Frankie." Adored by fans in America and overseas, they continue to perform internationally, allowing fans to bask in their love for entertaining.
