Sixpence None The Richer music biography continued...
Guitarist/songwriter Matt Slocum met vocalist Leigh Bingham Nash at a church retreat. They added Tess Wiley (guitar) JJ Plasencio (bass) and Dale Baker (drums) for 1995's This Beautiful Mess, which was recorded off the indie R.E.X. label. In 1997, the group signed to Steve Taylor's label Squint Entertainment and released a self-titled album, which slowly began attracting attention from a wider audience in the mainstream industry. In 1999, after some lineup changes, Sixpence released the single "Kiss Me" which propelled them into the national spotlight with placements in the films, "She's All That" and "Not Another Teen Movie," as well as the teen-oriented television show Dawson's Creek. The band's 1999 follow-up—a rendition of The La's "There She Goes" was also a major hit thanks to its inclusion in the Nickolodeon film Snow Day. In 2000, the band's label, Squint, folded and founding drummer Baker left the band, but Sixpence signed with Reprise and came back in 2002 with Divine Discontent. The album contained the band's cover of the Crowded House classic "Don't Dream It's Over," which put Sixpence None the Richer's back onto the charts in early 2003; the song's inclusion on the soundtrack to television's Smallville was a major hit with the teen audience as well, and solidified the Sixpence's popularity with young listeners.
Despite their success, Sixpence split up to pursue solo projects in 2004. In 2008, the band reunited and released a new EP, entitled My Dear Machine, backed by major summer festival tour dates throughout the US and Europe. In October 2008, they released their first Christmas album entitled, The Dawn of Grace. Said Leigh Nash of the album: "Now that we are back together, we thought a Christmas album would be a nice gift for our long time supporters. We love it and hope they will too!" Every indication is that they did.
