a lead singer—which makes them truly unique among metal groups. Asserting that they are "not about our names or our faces,' original members DJ Sid Wilson, drummer Joey Jordison, bassist Paul Gray, percussionist Chris Fehn, guitarist Jim Root, sampler Craig Jones, percussionist Shawn Crahan, guitarist Mic Thompson and vocalist Corey Taylor—have all taken numbers 0-8 as stage names and don bizarre homemade masks for shows, photos shoots, and interviews.
In 1996, Slipknot self-released an album entitled Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat, but their big break would not come until 1999, when Roadrunner Records released their self-titled album to much critical acclaim. They gradually built an audience through near-constant touring, working their way up to the summer Ozzfest package tour, which really expanded their audience. Their live shows were a much-discussed hit with metal fans, and the band performed with such energy that Crahan gashed his head open on his own drum kit twice that summer, requiring stitches both times. The Slipknot songs "Wait and Bleed" and "Spit It Out" got the band some airplay, but most of the buzz came from touring and word of mouth. Finally, in the spring of 2000, Slipknot was certified platinum; the first such album in Roadrunner's history.
After their 2001 sophomore release, Iowa, the band members split up for a few years to pursue different musical ventures, but reunited for the issue of 2004's "Pulse of the Maggots," which was soon brief tour as a warm-up for their dates headlining Ozzfest that summer. (The group also debuted a fully redesigned third generation of their famous masks.) Another album, Subliminal Verses, was released in May 2004. It peaked at 2 on the Billboard 200, and the band toured steadily for the next year and a half in support. They released 2-disc live album in November 2005, proving that they were back and better than ever. In 2006, the band won the Grammy for Best Metal Performance for "Before I Forget." The DVD Voliminal: Inside the Nine was released December 5, 2006. In January 2007, Corey Taylor stated in an interview with VH1 that the band was going on another brief hiatus.
