Snow Patrol music biography continued...
formed in late 1994 as "Shrug" by students Gary Lightbody and Mark McClelland at the University of Dundee in Dundee, Scotland, the band started by performing gigs at the university and surrounding pubs before changing their name to Polar Bear in late 1995, and to Snow Patrol in 1997. The band was ultimately rounded out by Johnny Quinn (drums), Nathan Connolly (guitar) and Tom Simpson. Snow Patrol released three critically acclaimed, but commercially unsuccessful albums on indie label Jeepster in the late 90s, but increasingly grew disenchanted with them. After being dropped by Jeepster the band signed to the mainstream Polydor label. They gained mainstream success with their song "Run" (which debuted at No.5 in the UK singles chart), as well as the album it was from, the 2003 release, Final Straw which was produced by Jacknife Lee. It peaked at #3 in the UK albums chart and was also a huge success in the United States when released there in 2004.
Snow Patrol achieved worldwide success with 2006's Eyes Open, which boasted such hit singles as "You're All I Have" and "Hands Open." While "Hands Open" was the first American single, "Chasing Cars" pushed its way onto the download and pop charts after it was heard in the second season finale of the television show Grey's Anatomy. Overall, the album went on to sell 4.7 million copies worldwide and led to Snow Patrol's nomination for 3 BRIT Awards. Worldwide, the band has sold over 7 million albums, earning even greater popularity in the United States with "Signal Fire" from the Spider-Man 3 soundtrack. "Whenever we go anywhere new, we're like kids in a huge empty house," says founding member Gary Lightbody. "We want explore all these big spaces, climb into the attic and rake among boxes and get down into the basement and find the stuff that has been stashed away. For us the world could never be too big." And for Snow Patrol's fans it can never have enough of the band's music.
