Spice Girls Biography (Continued)

Adams, and Michelle Stephenson. The group was named Touch and immediately began working towards creating an album. Stephenson soon quit the group and was eventually replaced by Emma Bunton. Unsatisfied with their controlling management, the girls fired them, hired producer Eliot Kennedy and renamed themselves Spice Girls. In 1995, they were brought to the attention of Simon Fuller of 19 Management who quickly became their manager. In September 1995, they signed a contract with Virgin Records.

Their first single “Wannabe” was released in England on July 8, 1996 entering the charts at number three quickly moving up to number one and occupying the spot for a solid seven weeks. The success immediately followed in 31 other countries. The second single “Say You’ll Be There” also peaked at number one and sold 200,000 copies in its first week. The long awaited album, Spice, finally hit the shelves at the end of 1996 and was accompanied by the release of their third single “2 become 1”. The album and single skyrocketed to the top of the charts marking the beginning of the Spice Girls phenomenon. It soon became time for the girls to break into the American market. The first single appeared in January 1997 to raving reviews while the album was released in February. Spice had evidently proved to be a major hit in the US as it was certified 7x platinum.

The follow-up, Spiceworld, was issued a few months later in November 1997 spawning hits “Spice Up Your Life”, “Too Much”, “Stop”, and “Viva Forever”. The album sold over 5 million copies in Europe, the US, UK, and Canada. The overwhelming fame continued with the release of their film debut, Spiceworld: The Movie, which generated over $70 million worldwide. In 1998, the Spice Girls embarked on a European and North American tour playing 102 sold out dates. Towards the end of the tour, Halliwell was often absent during several performances immediately stirring up rumors that she was leaving the group. The rumors were eventually confirmed on May 31, 1998 when she announced her official departure from the Spice Girls. She moved on releasing several moderately successful solo albums. The remaining members were confident that they would continue to succeed despite the missing Geri component. They issued “Goodbye” in December 1998 which became a number one hit in the UK and in Canada where it maintained its high ranking for a record 16 weeks.

The release of Forever followed in November 2000 proving to be a major disappointment in comparison to the success of their previous albums. The new record which introduced an edgier R&B oriented Spice Girls marked the end of their career as a group. The girls announced their split in February 2001 and have since focused on their solo efforts. There have been numerous suspicions of a reunion, however is yet to be confirmed.
