Steps music biography continued...
answered an ad for singers in a British music magazine. They included Lisa Scott-Lee, Ian "H" Watkins, Claire Richards, Lee Latchford-Evans and Faye Tozer. Steps' debut single "5-6-7-8" was issued in 1997, and fell just short of the British Top Ten. Their 1998 follow-up, a cover of Bananarama's "Last Thing on My Mind." reached number six in Britain. "One for Sorrow" was the group's biggest hit to date, and led to the release of their debut album Step One; their Christmas single, the double-sided "Heartbeat"/"Tragedy," became their first UK number one in early 1999. The smashes "Love's Got a Hold of My Heart" and "After the Love Has Gone" preceded Steps' sophomore LP, Steptacular. The album charted at number 1 and was eventually certified 4x platinum, thus becoming their second UK million selling album. The group subsequently released an album in North America which was titled Step One and was an amalgamation of their first two albums. The group's next two singles "Say You'll Be Mine / Better the Devil You Know" and "Deeper Shade of Blue" both continued their top five run. In July 2000, Steps released another double-A-side, consisting of the Steptacular track "When I Said Goodbye" and an entirely new song "Summer of Love". Soon after, the group won the BRIT award for best-selling live act of the year, capping a storied run up the charts.
In October 2000, Steps released "Stomp," their second and final number one single. Their third album, Buzz, followed shortly thereafter. In 2001, rumors of a split started circulating after it was announced that Steps would be releasing a greatest hits album. Denying these rumors, Steps released "Chain Reaction", a cover of the popular Diana Ross song, as the first single from Gold - The Greatest Hits. The single became their biggest in almost two years. The second single, "Words Are Not Enough / I Know Him So Well", was another top five hit. In December 2001, the buzz did come true as Steps officially broke up, but not before they had sold some 15 million records.
