Steven Curtis Chapman music biography continued...
Kentucky, Chapman took to singing as a youngster, and dropped out of college to move to Nashville in pursuit of a music career. In the 1980s, Chapman wrote a song called "Built to Last," which was recorded by prominent gospel group, The Imperials. The strength of the song prompted him to be signed to a songwriting deal with Sparrow Records, where he rose to prominence, penning tunes for prominent artists. In 1987, Chapman released his first album, First Hand. The album included the song "Weak Days," which peaked at #2 on the Contemporary Christian Music chart. In 1988, he followed with his second album, Real Life Conversations, which earned him four more hits, including the #1 song "His Eyes," which garnered Chapman a host of awards. In 1992, Chapman made a successful jump to a more mainstream audience with his album The Great Adventure. The album garnered Chapman two Grammys--one for the album, and the other for the title track video. Recorded in Los Angeles, The Heaven in the Real World album followed. Marketed to a more mainstream audience, the album was an unmitigated success and made Chapman one of the pioneers in the nascent CCM movement.
Chapman's immense popularity in the contemporary Christian music realm was further cemented in 1995, when he won six Dove awards. The year 1995 also saw the release of Chapman's Music of Christmas album. He quickly followed this with Signs of Life in 1996. More Dove awards followed, and he landed his fourth Grammy for Best Contemporary Gospel Album in 1999 for Speechless. HE continued to record and perform with his list of accomplishments to date including 50+ Dove Awards, 5 Grammys, an American Music Award, 2 certified platinum and 10 gold albums, 10 million total albums sold and 41 #1 radio hits. "My goal isn't just to share what I believe," Chapman proclaimed in a Sparrow Records press biography, "it is to show that belief is important, that it can make a difference, that there can be meaning to all of this we're going through." Clearly, his legions of fans have been moved by Chapman's message.
