Sum 41 music biography continued...
Whibley (Bizzy D) on vocals and guitar, Dave Baksh (Brown Sound) also on guitar and vocals, Steve Jocz (Stevo 32) on the drums and Jason McCaslin (Cone) on the bass. The band chose the name Sum 41 because they formed the band 41 days into the summer before grade 12. After playing to sold out crowds locally, in 1999 the band sent a video press kit of themselves to Island Records, which was just playful enough to catch exec's eyes and garner them their first record deal. The Half Hour of Power EP followed, and some Warped Tour dates got the word out. They returned in 2000 with the sunny, joyous full-length All Killer No Filler, and the singles "In Too Deep" and "Fat Lip" became staples of both modern rock radio and Total Request Live. After extensive touring, Sum 41 went back to the studio and record the harder-edged Does This Look Infected?, but the band retained their commitment to punk pop fun and the sophomoric humor that made them stars to begin with.
Sum 41 got serious in 2004, when they became active in the charity War Child Canada and lent a hand during the shooting of a documentary about the war in the Congo. Barely escaping from that activity alive, they went back to the studio and game up with a far more somber album—Chuck—dedicated to UN aid worker, Chuck Pelletier, who was instrumental in getting them to safety. The DVD Rocked: Sum 41 in Congo was released at the end of 2005 and the live album Go Chuck Yourself came out the following March. Guitarist Dave Baksh left the band during the spring of 2006 due to creative differences, but Sum 41 continued on as a trio, and their first album as such, Underclass Hero, appeared in July 2007. It debuted at #7 in the United States, making it the band's highest chart position to date, and proving that their popularity can outdistance any lineup changes.
