guitarist Edgar Froese, percussionist Klaus Schulze and keyboardist Conrad Schnitzler. They made a name for themselves in Germany with their first two releases, 1971's Alpha Centauri and the following year's Zeit, bit wouldn't break into the international scene until 1973's Atem, which led to a record contract with Virgin. Tangerine Dream's first album for Virgin, Phaedra, was one of the first to employ Moog synthesizers and sequencers and was a milestone not only for the group, but for instrumental music in general. The album shot into the British Top 20, earning Tangerine Dream a global audience. The follow-ups Rubycon and the live Ricochet were also based on the same trance-inducing electronic music formula with which Phaedra had been built, and further positioned Tangerine Dream in a musical space all their own. In 1977 The Exorcist's director William Friedkin tapped Tangerine Dream for soundtrack work on his film Sorcerer. By the time a new lineup had stabilized in 1981, Hollywood was after Tangerine Dream. The group worked on the soundtracks to more than 30 films during the 1980s, among them Risky Business, The Keep, Flashpoint, Firestarter, Vision Quest and Legend, giving them a truly international following.

After moving from Virgin to Zomba in the eighties, a remodeled line-up began to experiment with different forms including the incorporation of vocals. In the mid-'90s, the band's lineup was evolving again, and they began to record on a host of indie labels. Increasingly, the music of Tangerine Dream began to reflect the group's growing imprint on a generation of electronica and dance artists. They continued to record and perform and to celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2007, Tangerine Dream gave a special UK concert at the London Astoria. All in all, TD has garnered seven Grammy nominations and released over one hundred albums over the last four decades, making them one of the most pioneering and dominant acts on the electronic music scene.
