Tarkan music biography continued...
and Istanbul and at 16 he was already performing in bars and clubs. In 1993, he met Mehmet Sögütoglu, the owner of Istanbul Records, one of the most important record companies in Turkey, and was signed to a recording contract. In less than a year, Tarkan became the most popular star on the Turkish pop scene, thanks to his albums, "Yine Sensiz" (selling over 700,000 copies) and "Aacayipsin" (selling over 2 million copies). At the end of 1994, he moved to New York, where he studied English, and began to forge an international career. His third album "Ölürüm Sana" was released in Turkey and several European countries. When the single, "Simarik" became an instant hit in Europe, Universal Music France decided to release an album for the European market, compiling the best songs of Tarkan's second and third albums. The result was the album "Tarkan," which became a smash in Europe and next conquered the Latin American market, as well. At the height of his fame in 1999, Tarkan had to return to Turkey to serve in the military, but he came back to music in 2001 with the album Karma, and became the Pepsi spokesperson in Turkey. Now an international brand, Tarkan's next effort was Dudu, released by his own label HITT Music, in the summer of 2003. It was the first album of its kind to sell over a million copies in Turkey, making Tarkan a national hero.
In October 2005, Tarkan released his long awaited English language debut single "Bounce" in Turkey. His debut English language album Come Closer was released in parts of Europe on April 2006, under a Universal Music label. The album featured such songwriters as Lester Mendez, who co-wrote Shakira's "Underneath Your Clothes" and Brian Kierulf, who produced songs for Britney Spears. It was not as big a success in the US as Tarkan had hoped, but that did nothing to slow his momentum in Turkey, and he released Metamorfozsis there in 2007. Having sold over 17 million albums worldwide, Tarkan remains one of Turkey's national treasures and one of that nation's greatest musical exports.
