Tears For Fears music biography continued...
the band's name from Arthur Janoff's book on primal scream therapy. Riding on a wave of popularity for new wave music, TFT scored a record contract with Polygram in 1982, which resulted in their debut album, The Hurting, a year later. The album became a major hit in Britain and yielded five hit singles, setting the stage for their assault on America with the following year's Songs From the Big Chair. A major hit stateside, the album yielded several chart topping tunes, including "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" and "Shout," which both made it to #1, as well as "Head Over Heels" the video of which made TFF the darlings of MTV. It wouldn't be until 1989, that the duo came up with their follow-up album, The Seeds of Love, which featured the soulful vocals of Oleta Adams on the single "Woman in Chains" and powered the album to #8 overall, while the single, "Sowing the Seeds of Love" reached #2 in the U.S., adding an exclamation point to a decade filled with success on both sides of the pond.
Again, Tears for Fears spent several years working on the follow-up to Seeds of Love, during which time they released the collection Tears Roll Down: Greatest Hits 82-92. Smith and Orzabal began to fight with each other and Smith left the group in 1992, making Tears for Fears' 1993 comeback Elemental essentially a solo album from Orzabal. The two went their separate ways recording as solo acts for the remainder of the 90s. In 2004, they reunited for Everybody Loves a Happy Ending, their first collaboration in over a decade. It would be the beginning of a fruitful period for the duo, which led to touring in Europe and the United States, bringing back the sound that so many fans had fallen in love with in the first place.
