alongside the Ramones.

Often mentioned in the same breath as the Velvet Underground, Television shares that band's status of having inspired many listeners to form (successful) bands, while failing to breakthrough to a large mainstream audience themselves.

Headed by the equally strong personalities of high school friends Richard Hell (bass/vocals) and Tom Verlaine (guitar/vocals), the band's sound was built around a two-guitar interplay (Verlaine and Richard Lloyd), sharp lyrics and an nods to '60s rockers such as the 13th Floor Elevators. Minimalist at times, but always fiery, the group created a template for modern punk-rock while predicting future New Wave turns.

Among the group's best known songs, "Blank Generation" is a disaffected anthem for the ages. The band broke up in 1978, but reformed in 1992 and began playing out somewhat consistently by the early 2000s. Plans are reportedly in the works for a new album (although odds are it will either pale in comparison to Marquee Moon, or be blindly embraced by fans eager to have a new slab of hot wax from this band after so many decades of absence).
