Texas music biography continued...
Johnny McElhone, the group originally consisted of McElhone, bass, Eddie Campbell, keyboards, Ally McErlaine, guitar, Richard Hynd, drums and Sharleen Spiteri, vocals and guitar. Texas scored a UK hit in 1989 with their debut single "I Don't Want a Lover," off their debut album Southside, which went on to sell two million copies worldwide. The follow-up albums Mothers Heaven (1991) and Ricks Road (1993) were less successful and failed to provide the band with any further big hit singles in the UK, though they were discovered by Ellen DeGeneres in the U.S. and earned a higher profile when she used a tune off Ricks Road for her then TV sitcom, Ellen. In 1997 Texas came back with "Say What You Want"; which became their biggest hit single yet, peaking at #3. The album White on Blonde followed, entering at #1, where it would return a year later. Other hit singles from the album were "Halo", "Black Eyed Boy", and "Put Your Arms Around Me." The band's fifth album, The Hush, was released in 1999 with the lead-off single "In Our Lifetime" which was a huge hit in the UK reaching number 4 and was included in the "Notting Hill" Soundtrack. This album went straight into the UK album charts at #1 like its predecessor. The second single, "Summer Son", became a massive hit across Europe reaching the Top 5 in the UK, France and several other countries, and making Texas true international superstars. In 2000 a Greatest Hits album was released, solidifying their status at the top of the alternative rock genre
In 2003, Texas released the album Careful What You Wish For yielding the hit single "Carnival Girl." The album was not critically or commercially well-received because of its departure into pop and rap territory. It was followed by Redbook (2005) and the BBC Sessions (2007), which also experimented with different musical genres, but landed the group back on the charts much to the delight of longtime fans.
