Nick Wheeler formed the band in 2000, when they were both still in high school. Looking for additional players in their newly established project, the two eventually picked Mike Kennerty to be the group's guitarist and Chris Gaylor to replace drummer Tim Campbell, making the band's formation fixed as a quartet. After building a large local fan base, the band were signed by indie Doghouse Records and released their self-titled debut in October 2002. The album soon broke into the top 40 of the Billboard 200, and peaked at number 8 on the Top Heatseekers chart. However, it was through one of its tracks entitled "Swing, Swing" that the quartet finally hit the mainstream as the single managed to enter four Billboard charts in 2003, unquestionably bringing them to widespread popularity. The tremendous success they had achieved attracted DreamWorks Records which re-released "The All-American Rejects" in 2003 with a bonus track of the acoustic version of "The Cigarette Song" in its British edition. After taking a two-year hiatus to hold numerous shows across the country, the band marked their comeback in 2005 through their sophomore effort, Move Along, which subsequently went gold and proved The All-American Rejects were anything but.



In 2006, the band found themselves at the center of even greater media storm, when their music video for the tune "Move Along" went into heavy rotation on MTV and garnered the band Best Group Video at the MTV Video Awards. After that, the band slowed down on touring and decided to focus on crafting new music for their next studio album, When the World Comes Down, which was ultimately released in November 2008. The album spawned several hit singles, including The Real World", which was confirmed to be on the soundtrack for video game, "Madden NFL 09". If there was any doubt that AAR had brought emo pop to the forefront, this erased it.
