as music supervisor for CBS' new Saturday morning cartoon The Archie Show, which was to feature a new original song every week. Kirschner brought songwriter Jeff Barry aboard, and he brought along Ron Dante, a sessions singer, to be the lead male vocalist. They hired Jeannie Thomas as the group's female vocalist. The band's other musicians included guitarist Hugh McCracken, bassists Chuck Rainey and Joey Macho, keyboard player Ron Frangipane and drummers Buddy Saltzman and Gary Chester. When the Archies TV show debuted, it was a hit, and The Archies first single, "Bang Shang-a-Lang," almost made the Top 20 in late 1968. Soon after, Barry hired songwriter/backing vocalist Andy Kim, and replaced Thomas with Toni Wine. Barry and Kim co-wrote "Sugar, Sugar," which became a smash hit in 1969, zooming to the top of the charts and staying there for four weeks. The tune eventually sold over three million copies in the U.S. alone, and wound up as Billboard's number one song of the year. The follow-up, "Jingle Jangle," reached the Top Ten, but from there the Archies' failed to rack up significant chart success. Their last Top 40 hit came in the spring of 1970 with "Who's Your Baby?," after which Dante and the others left to pursue solo careers with varying degrees of success. Still, Archies fans who still remember Jughead and the gang with affection also have a spot in their hearts for the real performers who brought them to life.
