The Bravery Music Biography |
For post-punk influenced dance rock, few bands can rival New York City’s The Bravery. The group formed in early 2003 when college friends Sam Endicott (vocals/guitar) and John Conway (keyboards) hooked up in the Big Apple and added Anthony Burulcich (drums), Michael Zakarin (guitar), and Mike H. (bass) to the line-up. After playing their first gig at the Stinger Club in Brooklyn in mid-summer, the Bravery's sound was all the rage. The Bravery Biography (Continued) |
st immediately jumped on the The Bravery bandwagon with The Village Voice proclaiming The Bravery to be "New York's Official Next Big Thing" while MTV and Rolling Stone hailed them as an artist to watch. In the spring of 2005, The Bravery released their self-titled debut LP, which produced two somewhat successful singles in "An Honest Mistake" and "Unconditional." After the album’s release, The Bravery went on an extended tour to promote it, but as soon as that was finished, they returned to the studio to record a new album with popular producer Brendan O’Brien (Rage Against the Machine, Neil Young) and came up with The Sun and the Moon in May 2007, an album which many critics hailed for its use of “new instrumentation” and “added textures.”
While on the road, The Bravery continued working on "The Moon" recording on the back of their tour bus, in hotels and dressing rooms. In December 2007, The Bravery headed back into their New York City home studios to finish up their more raw and electronic version of the songs. In January 2008, The band announced the new release of The Sun and the Moon Complete, a two disc set featuring "The Sun" (the original Brendan O’Brien produced 12 songs) and "The Moon" (the same exact 12 songs, in the same order, but re-imagined and re-worked by the band.) Interestingly, according to Endicott the band’s name is connected with living in New York in this “really weird time.” “People,” he says, “are constantly waiting for something bad to happen. I wrote these songs and formed this band to make sure I didn’t get overcome by that sense of fear. That’s what this band is about – standing tall and not being afraid.” Indeed, The Bravery has been fearsome in their commitment to meaningful music.
