The Fratellis music biography continued...
about how the outfit, which consists of Jon Fratelli (vocals/guitar), Mince Fratelli (drums/vocals), and Barry Fratelli (bass), got its name. Some say it is just a variation on Barry's surname, while others say that the Fratellis borrowed it from the nemesis featured in Steven Spielberg film, The Goonies. No matter the origins of the band's name, fans agree that the trio is supremely talented. They played their first show on March 4, 2005 in the O'Henry's bar in Glasgow, and received their first radio play in 2005 on central Scotland's Beat 106 (now XFM Scotland) Beatscene show hosted by Jim Gellatly. They were discovered by their manager Tony Fratelli in McChuills Bar, Glasgow and were then signed by Fallout Records after just nine performances. The trio's EP was released in April 2006, and featured such hit Fratellis song as "Creepin' Up The Backstairs", "Stacie Anne" and "The Gutterati?" Their first album, Costello Music, was released in September 2006 and charted at number two in the official UK album charts for three weeks.
NME magazine ran a two page feature on The Fratellis in the August 10, 2006 issue, proclaiming them "the best new band in Britain". On February 14, 2007 they won the Best British Breakthrough Act, voted for by Radio One listeners, at the 2007 BRIT Awards. The band capitalized on their success by touring throughout the United Kingdom and releasing their first concert DVD in September 2007. Edgy in Brixton, as it was called, was later released in the United States to much applause. While still building a name for themselves outside of the United Kingdom, The Fratellis are enjoying great success in their homeland, where the chorus from the song "Chelsea Dagger" has been adopted by many sports teams as their anthem, to be played whenever they score a goal. And outside of the sports arena, the future for The Fratellis seems very bright indeed.
