The Fray Biography

A Denver-based foursome whose earnest and melodic songs have been striking a huge chord with audiences, The Fray have built quite a name for themselves in the pop/rock genre. The band formed in 2002 when former schoolmates Isaac Slade (vocals, piano) and Joe King (guitar, vocals) unexpectedly bumped into each other at a local music store. The pair began a series of two-man jam sessions and soon expanded their lineup with two of Slade's former bandmates, drummer Ben Wysockiand guitarist David Welsh. The Fray began playing many local gigs, released two EPs, and soon Continued...

The Fray Biography (Continued)

made a name for themselves on Denver radio. (Westworld, a Denver alt.weekly publication, deemed them "Best New Band" in 2004). Thanks to this exposure, they caught the eye of Epic Records. The label ultimately signed the band in December 2004, and the Fray toured alongside Weezer and Ben Folds the following summer.
The Fray’s big break came in September 2005, with the recording of the album of How to Save a Life. The first single, "Over My Head (Cable Car)" found a quick home on modern rock radio. By early 2006, it had crossed over to Top 40 chart status, peaking at number eight and whetting the public's appetite for more Fray songs. The band responded by releasing the album's title track, which was heavily used in a promotional campaign for the TV series Grey's Anatomy and quickly became one of 2006's biggest singles. "How to Save a Life" was a worldwide smash, reaching the Top Ten in the U.S. (where it continued to chart for 58 consecutive weeks). When all was said and done, The Fray's debut had been certified double-platinum in the U.S. and was declared the best-selling digital album of all time.
As a result of their tremendous success with, How To Save A Life, the band has gone from playing small club gigs and opening slots to headlining larger venues, including a "hometown" gig at legendary Denver venue Red Rocks, which was famously host to U2 (two tracks of their classic live EP Under A Blood Red Sky was recorded there; Incubus and Dave Matthews Band are among the other artists to release live recording from the fabled venue). As the Fray continues to record, it is doubtless that their next tunes will resonate just as deeply with pop/rock fans.
