and his new manager Chas Chandler and consisted of Hendrix as guitarist and lead vocalist, Noel Redding as bassist and back vocalist and Mitch Mitchell as drummer. Initially conceived as just a backing band, The Experience would instead be one of the pioneers of the rock band form known as the power trio, which essentially strips a lineup down to the essentials: bass, guitar and drums, and makes for loud and extroverted playing. After playing gigs in top venues in France and the U.K., and appearing on several British pop television shows, The Experience were signed in 1966 by the manager of The Who to a new record label, Track Records. Hendrix's first single was a cover of "Hey Joe", followed by the Hendrix-penned "Stone Free." Further success came in early 1967 with "Purple Haze" which featured the "Hendrix chord" and "The Wind Cries Mary". The four singles were all UK Top 10 hits and were also popular internationally. The first Jimi Hendrix Experience album, Are You Experienced, was released in the United Kingdom in May 1967 and shortly thereafter internationally, outside of USA and Canada. It was backed by an extensive tour through the UK and parts of Europe, where the band flaunted their psychedelic appearance and Hendrix's onstage guitar theatrics. The Experience would next set out to conquer the United States with a performance at one the country's first music festivals, The Monterey Pop Festival in California in June 1967. Their performance culminated in Hendrix setting his guitar on fire onstage, which was captured in a documentary that would make The Experience superstars.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience's second 1967 album, Axis: Bold as Love was his first recording made with a view to a stereo release and found Hendrix further experimenting with format and guitar technique. The Experience's third recording, a double album, Electric Ladyland (1968), marked Hendrix's split with Chas Chandler and included a number of compositions and arrangements for which Hendrix is still remembered, including "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" as well as Hendrix's rendition of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower". This would turn out to be The Experience's final album, as the group broke up in 1969, one of the most influential outfits in the history of rock and roll.
