The Kooks music biography continued...
Institute of Modern Music and formed their group in 2004, taking their name from a song on the David Bowie album, Hunky Dory. The Kooks consisted of guitarist and vocalist Luke Pritchard, drummer Paul Garred, lead guitarist and backing vocalist Hugh Harris, and bassist Max Rafferty (who was later replaced by Dan Logan). Before the end of 2005, the British foursome was releasing singles for Virgin UK. "Eddie's Gun" and "Sofa Song" did moderately well on the U.K. singles chart, but they scored their first hit with "You Don't Love Me." In January 2006, the Kooks dropped their debut album, Inside In/Inside Out, which shot to number two in the UK Album Chart, eventually selling two million copies worldwide and going triple platinum in the UK. Inside In/Inside Out was followed by the single "Naïve," penned by Pritchard when he was just sixteen, and which reached number five in the UK Singles Chart on its release in March 2006. The Kooks' rise to fame accelerated with the release of another Top 10 single, She Moves in Her Own Way, and an opening spot for The Rolling Stones tour through Europe in the same year. By the end of 2006, The Kooks were also touring in the United States, cementing their status as the next wave of brilliant British singer/songwriters.
The Kooks released the first of their new material in March 2008 with the single "Always Where I Need To Be." The Kooks' second album, Konk, recorded at Ray Davies' Konk studio in North London followed in April and went straight to number one in the U.K. At the same time, The Kooks released a second album of more new material and alternative versions, recorded at the Rak studio complex. "We wanna keep putting out different kinds of records and different genres," Pritchard has said. "We wanna surprise people." From their fans' tremendous reaction to their work, you'd have to say they appreciate it.
