The Pussycat Dolls music biography continued...
California and later in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Dance troupe was founded in 1993 by choreographer Robin Antin and released their first single in 2004. Current members are Nicole Scherzinger (former singer of American Popstars' Eden's Crush), Carmit Bachar, Jessica Sutta, Melody Thornton, Kimberley Wyatt, and Ashley Roberts.
The Burlesque act ran from 1995 to 2003. The group performed in old fashioned lingerie and pin-up costumes to choreography inspired by Bob Fosse (Sweet Charity, Cabaret, Chicago). Weekly performances often featured popular celebrities such as Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, Pamela Anderson, Pink, Carmen Electra, and many more. The Pussycat Dolls were re-cast and transformed into a recording Pop/R&B group by music producers Jimmy Iovine and Ron Fair.
PCD, their debut album, premiered as #5 on the Billboard 200 in 2005 selling over 99 000 copies and 3.6 million worldwide. "Don't Cha", their first hit single, featuring Busta Rhymes won the 2005 Billboard Music Award for Top-selling R&B/Hip-Hop Single of the Year as well as the award for Top Dance/Club Play Single of the Year. "Stickwitu" was their second single to emerge reaching # 1 on the Billboard Pop Radio hits and sold over a million digital downloads worldwide. Black Eyed Peas member will.i.am is featured on "Beep", their third single while Snoop Dogg is featured on their latest track "Buttons".
An interactive website called the PCD Music Lounge was launched by Doppelganger and Interscope Records. The site is aimed at teens and provides them the opportunity to enter the PCD virtual nightclub, listen to music, make friends, and "look good". The Pussycat dolls were also supposed to have dolls modeled after them by toy maker Hasbro, however non-profit organizations "Dads and Daughters" and "Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood" successfully banned the idea due to the group's sexual nature and content.
