The Strokes music biography continued...

Julian Casablancas, the son of Elite Model Agency Group kingpin John Casablancas, and guitarist Albert Hammond Jr., the son of singer/songwriter Albert Hammond, whose songs include "It Never Rains in Southern California," "When I Need You," and "To All the Girls I've Loved Before. The line-up was rounded out by guitarist Nick Valensi, bassist Nikolai Fraiture, and drummer Fabrizio Moretti. With their incendiary live shows, The Strokes built a strong word of mouth following on the New York City club circuit. They buzz was so intense that Rough Trade released the group's three-song demo as The Modern Age EP in January 2001, which sparked a bidding war from which RCA emerged as the victors. Their major-label release, Is This It, sold more than 500,000 copies within six months and the The Strokes were suddenly pop stars and critics' darlings. Frequently compared to British bands of the '60s and New York City New Wave bands of the '70s and '80s, their first album included the songs "Last Nite" and "When It Started." In 2003 they released their second album, Room on Fire, and in 2006 they released First Impressions on Earth. Although neither album earned as much praise as their debut, they were commercially successful (especially in the U.K.) and included the hit singles "12:51" and "Juicebox," respectively. During the summer of 2006, The Strokes played several festival dates in Europe, and then crossed the pond to open for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on that band's U.S. tour. By this time it was quite clear that not only the fans, but their fellow musicians, had a great deal of respect for working hard and not having their success handed to them.

The Strokes' frontman Julian Casablancas and guitarist Nick Valensi started writing new material for their band's forthcoming new album in the latter stages of January 2009. In July 2009, The Strokes' official website stated that the band are spending the summer of 2009 recording material for a new album. Fans, critics and fellow artists have high expectations for the effort, as well they should.
