White (vocals, guitar, bass drum) came together in 2004 after the pair had met at Leeds University in Manchester, England, and discovered they had a mutual distrust of the music industry thanks to some bad experiences while playing in other bands. The band started out playing private parties locally, and their gigs ended up as some of the most sought after tickets on the Manchester party scene. They soon began to play at bigger venues and had a notable performance at Glastonbury Festival 2007. After an October 2007 tour of universities in the UK with Reverend and the Makers, The Ting Tings signed with Columbia Records UK. The first single released on Columbia was "Great DJ", which received considerable airplay on BBC Radio 1 and Xfm in the UK; and hyped by magazines such as the NME. The follow-up single, "That's Not My Name," reached Number 1 in the UK Singles chart, while the subsequent album, We Started Nothing, did the same. In the US, the single "Shut Up and Let Me Go" appeared in an iPod commercial in late April 2008, peaking at #55 on the Billboard Hot 100, while The single "We Started Nothing" was featured in the Gossip Girl series. With a tour of the UK and US behind them, The Ting Ting's are now poised to release their second studio album and continue their incredible success story.
