The Veils music biography continued...
they hit on a configuration and formula that made them stars. Finn was going to become a painter until he moved with his mother to his grandmother's home in Devonport, New Zealand as a teen, and to escape from the boredom of country living discovered the local folk music scene. In 2001, Andrews (vocals/guitar), then 18, returned to London. He befriended Ben Woollacott (drums), Adam Kinsella (bass), and Oliver Drake (guitar), and in a few months time the Veils were born. Shortly thereafter they were signed to Rough Trade's Blanco y Negro imprint, and immediately began working on their debut album. They issued the single "Guiding Light" in 2002; however, contractual disputes and artistic differences with Blanco y Negro turned into a two-year battle until they were signed the to Rough Trade proper in mid-2003. After recording a second single and playing as an opening act for a number of popular performers, The Veils' debut album, The Runaway Found was released in 2004 to great critical praise.
The original lineup of The Veils disbanded in late 2004 following inter-band infighting related to the future sound of the band. After this Andrews returned to New Zealand in order to find a new lineup and the write a new record. He spent the summer rehearsing with high school classmates Liam Gerrard (keyboards) and Sophia Burn (bass). The trio returned to London in early 2005 where they were joined by Dan Raishbrook (guitar) and Henning Dietz (drums). The group recorded their second album Nux Vomica in Los Angeles, with producer Nick Launay, and the album was released in September 2006. The album features string arrangements by ex-Lounge Lizard and long time Lou Reed collaborator Jane Scarpontoni. Nux Vomica was featured on 9 critics' Best Of The Year lists in 2006, and prompted the band to get busy writing songs for their next CD. Despite the line-up changes, The Veils' fan base has remained pretty constant and dedicated enough to follow the band from one continent to another, partaking in the kind of cathartic brand of alternative rock that makes the indie scene so vital.
