While many reality TV stars have tried their hand at singing, few have found the sort of success that has greeted Tila Tequila.
Born in Singapore but raised in Texas, Thien Thanh Thi Nguyen became known as Tila Tequila reportedly after a drinking incident with the titular liquor. As a teenager, Tequila tried her luck at modeling, frequently appearing in popular men’s magazines such as Maxim and Penthouse.
Truly a modern celebrity, Tequila gained further national attention when she became the most viewed profile on social networking site, MySpace.
Having conquered magazine and the internet, TV seemed like the next logical frontier. Tequila’s music drew an unexpected amount of attention, particularly since her thin voice and synth-heavy production did little to separate her from the herd of Pussycat Dolls and Britney Spears clones. Regardless, Tequila’s single “I Love U” was the most downloaded video on iTunes in March 2007, and an EP, Sex, followed.
Plans for a full length album are still in the works.
