Tito Nieves music biography continued...
Puerto Rico, Tito was raised in Brooklyn, New York, where he began his career participating in the group Orquesta Cimarron. In 1977, he teamed up with Singer,Héctor Lavoe and his Orchestra and joined The Conjunto Clasico. Nieves made his recording debut as a lead vocalist in 1978 when the prominent Puerto Rican composer Johnny Ortiz hired him for Johnny Ortiz Y Taibori. In 1979 he was invited by composer/producer Ramón Rodríguez to perform lead vocals on the first album by Julio Castro And His Orquesta La Masacre. The same year he became a founder member of Conjunto Clásico with Rodríguez and executive producer/chorus singer/percussionist Raymond Castro, and appeared on eight of the band's albums before departing in the mid-80s. Nieves signed with Ralph Mercado's RMM Records and made his solo debut on The Classic in 1988. The album went gold and contained the hit 'Sonanbulo'. The single 'I'll Always Love You', from his 1989 follow-up Yo Quiero Cantar, was the first English language salsa tune to reach number 1 in Puerto Rico, and, with help from WBLS disc jockey Frankie Crocker, was a crossover success on some New York R&B radio stations. Crocker introduced Tito at the 1990 New York Salsa Festival in Madison Square Garden and the singer would go on to become a chart topper in 1997 with the hit "I Like It Like That," an English language salsa tune which became an anthem of the 90s.
Unofficially known as 'The Pavarotti of Salsa,' among Tito's many accolades include three Ace Awards as a singer in 1994, for his video "No Me Vuelvo A Enamorar" in 1996 and "Best Artist in New York" in 1997. He was also nominated for a Billboard award in 1998 with his Clase Aparte album, received a 1999 Globo Award as Best Tropical Singer, a Premio Lo Nuestro Award for the song "Así Mismo Fue" in 2000 and a "Best Salsa Album" Grammy Award nomination in 2002. With key albums like 2004's Fabricando Fantasias, and 2006's Hoy, Manana y Siempre, Tito clearly remains in rhythm.
